New dismissal law – Balanced employment market Act (WAB)

Times are challenging in the Dutch employment market. Currently, the Dutch government is following up on its promise to tackle certain problems both employers and employees are faced with. The government wants to stimulate employers to give their employees indefinite term contracts by minimizing the differences between so-called ‘fixed’ and ‘flexible’ employment. The solution has been presented in the form of a legislative proposal called the Balanced employment market Act (Wet arbeidsmarkt in balans, “WAB”). The legislative proposal was adapted by the Dutch Senate on 28 May 2019. The new rules will enter into force in 2020. The WAB’s outlines can be found in the schedule below.
